About Velvet
Velvet is a pile fabric: extra yarns are woven into the cloth and cut, so that a short, dense, upright pile covers the face. The cut ends of the pile catch the light, which gives velvet its depth of colour and its soft sheen.
Brush a hand across velvet and you see its pile direction: one way the surface looks lighter, the other way darker. It feels soft and full, and the same dye looks richer on velvet than on a flat weave.
